After years of traveling with and coaching players and wondering why technology couldn’t support the world of tennis, in 2013 Donato Campagnoli has a futuristic idea…
…what if we could develop a technology to automatically extract valuable data from a video of a tennis match even between recreational players?
CEO and founder of Mas-Tech Donato Campagnoli writes the project and the Business Plan around that futuristic idea: a set of video-cameras recording a tennis match and a system detecting scores, strokes and actions in an intelligent way and bridging the communication between coaches and players.
Stop with subjective grids for coaches’ comments!
Enough with players’ “try and fail”!
The conversation between players, parents, coaches and all stakeholders of tennis finally reaches another level.
In 2011 Donato had this futuristic idea.
Mas-Tech is launched by CEO and founder Donato Campagnoli.
Mas-Tech is an “innovative start-up”, a high-tech IT company according to the Italian right.
Italian innovative start-ups have special characteristics: they develop ideas with great potential and have high qualified and skilled workforce such as researchers and tech advisors and collaborations with research centers and universities.
Mas-Tech identifies ISSIA, Bari (Institute of Intelligent Systems for Automation), a research center belonging to CNR, a nationalized entity whose mission is to create industrial knowledge and know-how for Italian start-ups and companies, as developers for the project.
We are studying implementations of the project and possible hardware set-ups with ISSIA.
We have equipped a court in Bari with a few cameras transforming it in a show-court.
We have installed 5 cameras permanently on the court and this will allow us to acquire videos and analyze them later on at the Institute.
By the way… why do not we file a patent?
Mas-Tech’s original project is modified and amplified to create a new project with incredible potential.
Why don’t we work on a platform where people – TV spectators at home or LIVE, players, coaches, parents, passionate etc. – can get overlays on the video footage of what’s going on during the match and get feedback about tactics and strategies?
Technology helps us detect where the players are and what they are doing: positions, strokes in sync with scores and tactics.
This is a great success!
Mas-Tech is awarded a research grant of 66.500 € from the Region Emilia Romagna for its original project.
This grant is part of the contributions of the European Social Fund.
A paper related to the project “Tennis player segmentation for semantic behavior analysis” is presented at the 2015 IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision Workshop (ICCVW) in Santiago del Chile.
Tennis tactical and strategic actions of tennis are broken down into basic events and this in order to model all possible interactions between the players.
Mas-Tech’s patent pending analytics will allow to analyze the behaviors of the players and thus to automatically retrieve positive/negative game patterns to provide the “Why” of tennis matches.
Mas-Tech’s CEO and Founder Donato Campagnoli goes to California to meet consultants and potential investors.
He visits number of people among them the product manager of Panasonic US, the CEO and Founder of Sportscouncil SV, Julien Blin, (a company promoting the use of technology in the world of Sport) and many Italian tech advisors and consultants gravitating around the tech ecosystem of the Silicon Valley.
They all are unanimous: the project has an unbelievable potential and can be disruptive in the way Tennis is perceived, watched and played.
The hardware-software platform to revolutionize the world of Tennis has been branded: ZLAM.
CEO and Founder Donato Campagnoli presents ZLAM to an audience of innovative start-ups and American influencers.
The presentation, in a 5′ long pitching format, is a great success.
Mas-Tech is chosen by the Hype Foundation at TrentinoSviluppo into the 10 most promising start-ups to follow the Italy based acceleration program.
TIA is the Tennis Industry Association a non-profit organization base in Hilton Head, SC, USA, whose mission is to promote the industry of tennis through data driven analysis of the marketplace world-wide.
The Innovation Challenge is a contest where start-ups applying tech to the world of tennis compete against each other for the award of the most disruptive technology for the tennis industry.
